The scariest step in any journey is the first one…..
Diagnosis & Evaluations
You may be filled with fear, anxiety, and uncertainty when recognizing that your child may have autism. However difficult this new journey may be, it is important that your family knows they are not alone in this. There are countless others like you who have been there before and there are so many resources available to help. Below is a list of providers throughout the state who perform diagnosing and evaluations to help determine if your child has autism. Unfortunately, The Treasure Coast is lacking in providers and demand throughout the state for diagnosing/evaluations is high so because of this it has led to extensive wait lists for most providers. This is why getting a diagnosis may take longer than expected. It is important to note that when making an appointment with a qualifying physician you make sure they also perform either the Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation, CARS-2 or ADOS as most insurances, especially Medicaid, require at least one of these to cover services such as ABA Therapy. I did not know this when beginning my journey with my first, he had a diagnosis from 3 different physicians but because he did not have one of the evaluations listed above his ABA services were delayed. Seven months after his diagnosis we finally had an evaluation and nine months after his initial diagnosis he finally began receiving the ABA therapy he so desperately needed.
**Depending on your insurance you may need a referral from your child's physician in order to be seen for a diagnosis/evaluation**
